Common Problems - Invalid Startup Directory Error
Often times when using legacy systems or 16bit aplications you may get a scary error that looks like:
Don't worry, this is a rather simple task once you translate the technical error code to English. It basically means:
Help; i can not find the folder containing the program I am suppose to run.
What has probably happed is that the program was prviously running over a mapped drive, though a VPN, or was running out of a shared network folder but the connection just isn't there or needs to be setup again. This occours often from connections sitting idle (unused) too long; so you need to reestablish your connection.
here is real wolrd example:
- A company i worked for had a program called Office Master System
-
Office Master System requires the program shared on G:
- The network path was "\\Server-name\shared folder"
Trouble shooting:
- Is the shared folder able to be accessed accross the network? Is the server online?
- Is the Drive mapped with the right letter (some applications are sensitive to a specific drive letter)?

- Go to "My Computer". Does the drive letter have a red x over it (this means disconnected)?

Solutions (use corrospending numbers):
- Go to the server and bring it back online, reboot if hanging or if it appears to be working fine other then this.
- My Network Places" -> "Entire Network" -> "Microsoft Windows Network" -> "workgroup" -> "server-name" Right click on the folder "G" (if named appropriatly or look for a folder such as "Master System", etc.) and choose "Map Network Drive". Be sure the drive letter in the drop down menu is "G". Be sure recconect at logon is checked.
- Just double click the mapped drive with the red x on it and run the legacy program again.
